Welcome to 20th Century Cloth! I’m Helen, a textile designer by profession and a vintage clothing enthusiast, collector and keen amateur dressmaker.
I live in North London with my graphic designer, photographer husband and two daughters.
Having completed a printed fashion textiles degree course at Winchester School of Art, I went on to work for several years in the fashion textile industry both employed and freelance. I have supplied several well known high street names with designs for printed textiles.
Now that original vintage clothing is becoming increasingly hard to find, and often too delicate for everyday wear, I have found myself making more of my clothes from vintage patterns and fabrics. Since good quality, well designed, original fabrics are scarce I have often wished I could find a wider range of fabrics that looked the part to use for my dressmaking.
After much deliberation I made the decision to use my skills and experience to design and print my own range of vintage inspired fabrics and make them available to fellow enthusiasts.

Aclimatise is the clothing brand created by APT Fabrics Ltd to offer innovative clothing systems manufactured in the UK; What does Apt fabrics do? It’s a simple question, but the answer is much, much harder. You could say that we provide technical and performance fabrics, and that would be true – but you would have neglected to mention our research and design side, which develops fabrics on a par with any of its competitors.
You would also have failed to mention that not only do we design and supply our own performance fabrics, but we also offer a bespoke service that can find the perfect material for our clients in as little as two weeks. That’s not to mention the fact that the company holds training seminars for other organisations, design optimisation services and has its own specialised fabric brands.
Yes, APT Fabrics is an impressive organisation, even more so when you consider that it is not even 8 years old .
Aero Leather Clothing Ltd, based in Scotland, have been manufacturers and sole distributors for the world famous Aero leather jackets since 1983, although it took a couple of years after we made the first Aero jacket in 1981. The current Aero company is a family business which was founded by Ken & Lydia Calder who still help to run the company and are still the major shareholders.
Extensive research and many years of manufacturing experience have gone into every aspect of the design and quality control of our jackets, to ensure that any garment bearing the “Aero Leather” label will provide decades of wear in the most hostile of environments and elements encountered in aviation, motorcycling, open top motoring and outdoor pursuits.
Every aspect of Aero is of the highest standard, the very best leather, selected and quality inspected by our technicians before they hand cut each individual panel. Then the lining is, again, carefully hand cut either from Alpaca wool, tweed, tartan, wool or silk. The leather panels and lining are then passed on to one of our sewing specialists who, on a traditional walking foot maching begins the process of constructing the item using stitching that is 3.25 times stronger than required. Once the item is built the specialist then puts his/her name to it and hands it to our Quality Inspector for the 28 point inspection that every item must undergo before leaving the premises.
Aklah Clothing was conceived after many years of being involved in various equestrian disciplines. These disciplines included show jumping, eventing and dressage before specialising in producing ridden Arabians to National and International standard under the Aklah Arabian banner.
During this period, it was felt that there were many choices in gentlemen’s apparel for stylish, casual lifestyle country wear that could endure the rigors of daily country life, but the choices were more limited in the ladies’ section. The apparel, in many cases, were either too delicate or fashionable.
So the seeds were sown and Aklah Clothing was conceived as a new venture in 2015. Our goal is to provide an affordable Made in Britain ladies rural lifestyle brand. We are building a classic collection, which will be the main stay of your wardrobe. Our collections are designed to be versatile, stylish and are subtly enhanced with contrasting seasonal trending colours that reflect the countryside.
In addition to producing a rural life style brand with British heritage, we are passionate about knowing the provenance of our clothing and have made the conscious decision for our clothing to be manufactured here in Britain.
We have built up relationships with company’s in Leicester, Nottingham, Lancashire and Scotland. Our polo shirts are not only manufactured but also knitted and dyed here in Britain. Our sweatshirt materials are knitted and woven in England and manufactured in Scotland. Finally, our pom-pom hats are also knitted in a factory in England
We hope you are, or become as passionate as we are about preserving British manufacturing and the true British heritage, that the rest of the world hankers for and come with us on the journey as we develop and build our versatile, stylish rural clothing range, fit for the rigours of country life.
Alan Little founded Alexander James 35 years ago. An accomplished tailor and cutter, born in Lancashire, the textile heartland of England, he had a passion for form and fit in clothes. He chose sporting wear to prove his skills, deciding to specialize in riding, hunting and shooting, where tradition rules. He knew this was where his hand tailoring, combined with the best cloths, would be quickly recognized. He was right.
Alan Little developed a highly successful formula, a range to suit everyone – and of all ages. Alexander James offers ready to wear items, a customized option, and a full bespoke service. This gives choice both in product and price. The only common thread is the finest material from some of the oldest mills and weavers in Britain.
Alan is a Past President of the Federation of Clothing Designers and Executives, as is his son, Mark; Both he and Carl can draw on his long experience for they work in this family business. Thus customers old and new, at home and abroad, reap the rewards of the Alexander James tradition in the robot age – good service and individual attention to detail by hand – so they look their best, in clothes just for them.
