Welcome to 20th Century Cloth! I’m Helen, a textile designer by profession and a vintage clothing enthusiast, collector and keen amateur dressmaker.
I live in North London with my graphic designer, photographer husband and two daughters.
Having completed a printed fashion textiles degree course at Winchester School of Art, I went on to work for several years in the fashion textile industry both employed and freelance. I have supplied several well known high street names with designs for printed textiles.
Now that original vintage clothing is becoming increasingly hard to find, and often too delicate for everyday wear, I have found myself making more of my clothes from vintage patterns and fabrics. Since good quality, well designed, original fabrics are scarce I have often wished I could find a wider range of fabrics that looked the part to use for my dressmaking.
After much deliberation I made the decision to use my skills and experience to design and print my own range of vintage inspired fabrics and make them available to fellow enthusiasts.

Airedale Solutions provides free web site design and implementation for ‘Not for profit’ organisations. You may be a charity, society or club who would like a professional looking web site but may not have the time, money or resources to create one. You may also be concerned about how or who is to keep the site up to date both with information about your organisation and to ensure that it takes advantage of the latest web features and technology. I recognised this problem a few years ago so set out to create web sites that are quick to develop, easy to maintain and most importantly enables each organisation to update the web site with the minimum of training and computer skills. So far over 200 organisations have signed up; all have been delighted with their sites. So please take a couple of minutes to look through this site and see what I can do for you.
As a family run company, we are committed to understanding the needs and requirements of our customers, this is reinforced by a dedicated team of staff throughout our operation.
Established in the early 1980’s, by Anthony James Holly, a hands on tradesman holding over 25 years experience as a tool maker, fabricator, welder and manufacturing engineer. Tony, (as he was known) devoted his efforts not only to his family, but to strive single handed in a small garden shed, despite having very little in the way of manufacturing equipment, tools or financial backing at the time, he managed to form a company that still stands today.
Despite economic recessions and manufacturing downturn over the years, A.J. Services has pushed forward and nowadays occupy’s a modern 12000 sq ft, fully equipped manufacturing and distribution facility within Birmingham City Centre.
Our manufacturing capabilities have increased over the years through constant investment in machinery and equipment facilitating in the continuity of product quality and development, together with the fast reliable turnaround that we offer our customers.
We specialise in weaving worsted fabrics from merino wool, the properties of which are good drape, soft texture, strength and versatility. Our fabrics are mainly used for men’s suits and jackets.
We design and develop new collections seasonally.
We offer over 250 suiting, trouser and jacketing patterns from stock in single and half pieces.
Alfred Brown fabrics are actively sought after by leading UK and international menswear brands and are truly representative of English elegance and style.
We have woven fine worsteds in Yorkshire for 100 years and for five generations we have kept the same core values.
Finely tailored garments throughout the world carry our labels, ‘Woven In England by Alfred Brown’ and are the mark of excellent quality and design.
My shop grew out of a life-long love of vibrant Liberty prints. As a child I would pore over my grandmother’s stash of quilting fabrics, savouring the bright delights of each new print.
Having completed a PhD in cancer genetics, I started to rediscover my creativity as a maker and designer of dresses, cushions, bags, childrenswear and quilts. Liberty of London Tana Lawn was a natural choice for my projects, with its fine weave, delicate and inventive patterns, intense long-wearing colours, and its traditional English heritage (many of its fabrics are still printed in the UK).
My shop has grown through my knowledge of Liberty and of stitch culture, sourcing rare, classic and new season prints to provide a range everyone can fall for.
Promotional Point of Sale (POS) display in the UK is incredibly high speed and involves thousands of component products being sourced from around the world. In the maelstrom Alplas provides a safe haven. A reliable UK based manufacturer who innovates and delivers right first time, on time.
As the UK’s original POS accessory company, known throughout the international display industry, and injection moulding manufacturer, Alplas is the source of many display accessory products in use today throughout the UK.
Incorporated in 1965 the company has been producing and distributing POS accessory products for over 40 years. In May 2010 the expansion of the company included the acquisition of Rayleigh Technical Design, an injection moulding company with a spread of customers across all industries. This not only doubled the footprint of the company and increased staff by 50% but gave direct control over many manufacturing processes. Alplas continues to invest in manufacturing capability and bring forward future product developments and the best advantages of cost effective UK manufacturing for the POS market and other industries.
Alplas has a reputation for finding innovative, low cost solutions to POS display problems and providing the right product to do the job. Display problems are presented to us on a daily basis and when a solution is adopted by a customer great attention is given to delivering, right first time, on time. This ethos will now roll out across all other non POS sectors.
Would you like to use your old jacket or coat and have me make it into something you can treasure for ever?
I don’t know about you but I love leather coats and the character each and every one has, all my jackets are sourced from charity shops and Ebay but mostly people give me their coats and jackets to repurpose into their own choice of bag/holdall. Not really following fashion trends but instead letting the details from the jacket guide my design.
So would you like to use your old jacket or coat and have me make it into something you can treasure for ever? Maybe you have something tucked away for a rainy day (or a new fashion era) maybe for some of you a big bat-winged embarrassing 80’s jacket with the notion ..”I’ll save that till it comes back in fashion” It probably will no doubt but listen here, I would love to get my hands on your beloved jacket and transform it into a beautiful bag/holdall/baby bag/clutch/hobo/you name it, I will make it!
This past year has been the most exciting as I set out to find beautiful galleries and stockists to sell my up-cycled products. Recycling more materials than ever and currently working on a range of mens accessories from British Airways plane seats along with the life jackets and seat belts.
