Alex is putting her creativity, designing ethical coloured jewellery, into a full-time career after winning Etsy’s New Talent Award this summer. Having grown up in the rural countryside of Northumberland, the designer has always been close to nature and has spent family holidays in Whitby collecting washed-up gems and fossils from the coastline.
Alex owns the very successful Etsy shop, Featheroak, selling an assortment of her handmade jewellery utilising natural resources.
She makes all of her jewellery in her compact caravan-turned-workshop which lies at the bottom of her garden – it’s where her quirky career took off. Alex specialises in rings which she makes from recycled copper pipe, making around 300 per month and 20-30 per day. Although she now says she would be willing to pay for an assistant to help her, she can’t believe how far she has come on her own.
In the future, Alex would love to work with precious metals including gold and silver, and even branch into making crowns and tiaras for weddings.
